Taffy: Hoan-gêng lí lâi. Lí thâu-chêng siá chi̍t-kù "...Tâi-gí m̄ hó". Che èng-kai sī "Tâi-gí bô hó" chiah tio̍h. What happens is that the Mandarin 不 (bù) translates as either m̄ or bô (無) depending on context. To negate an "adjective" (or stative verb) such as hó, one would use bô (e.g. bô súi "not pretty", bô khiáu "not smart"). Ordinary verbs, on the other hand, seem to be negated with m̄ (e.g. m̄ chai "(do/does) not know", m̄ cháu "not willing to leave"). The latter example suggests a degree of unwillingness to perform a certain action. e.g. Góa m̄ "I won't/wouldn't (do something)". Anyway, my 2 Old Taiwan Dollars.
